Copenhagen Royal Theater
Jones, Partners: Architecture, and JSFA
Competition
Copenhagen, Denmark 2002
The Royal Danish Theater was seen as an integral part of the life of the city of Copenhagen. The architectural strategies in the proposed design highlight the uniquely communal nature of theater as an art form, and represent this sense of community at the civic level. Various elements of the theater building type; such as flytowers, raked seating, and curtains; were employed for their symbolic and evocative possibilities. This 200,000 sq.ft. complex included a 700 seat theatre, a 250 seat experimental theatre and a 100 seat black box theatre/rehearsal room.
